Dharma Rescue on CBS Evening News
March 21,2017 CBS aired a segment they did on our rescue. We love what we do and now thanks to CBS we can share with everyone what we are doing with disabled dogs who might have been euthanized because our society cannot see beyond a disability which should never hold anyone or anything from accomplishing great things. Thank you to all the wonderful people for all your kind words and warm hearts for our special DAWGS. Please check back with periodically and see how your donations have helped our rescues, present and future. |

Rainbow
March 8, 2017. It has been along time since a blog but we have been very busy in 2016 working on our special DAWGS. We volunteer a lot with the DAWGS and sadly we don't have enough volunteers. I had to find time to put this blog up about a innocent 3lb chihuahua puppy. Her life on this planet was very very short. Why, maybe the bad breeding, maybe purchased by a family with young kids or just being with people who had poor experience with caring for such a tiny little being. I changed her name to Rainbow because when we got her she was so restless and humming Some Where Over the Rainbow calmed her down. Little Rainbow had serious neurological issues. She was blind, deaf and paralyzed at the young age of 12 weeks old. She came into a clinic to be euthanised by her family. The clinic ended up having her relinquished. The assumption was she was given to a youth as apet and was dropped on her head. But there was no proof. She could have been born this way and because she was so tiny at 6 weeks it wasn't obvious she was blind, deaf and couldn't walk. What ever the circumstance her life started off so unfairly. We had her for a week and had to return her to the clinic because she had an infection. Her tiny body was not strog enough to fight it off. How could a dog yu had for 1 week leav such an impact on your heart, I don't know but it did. |

DAWGS Volunteering
Nov. 2015. We got a call from Santa Monica College if we could bring a few of our therapy dogs to an event they were having for the students on Nov. 24. It was a last minute request because another therapy organization backed out. It was an event to relax the students during finals. We picked Lovey, Dolly and Rudy to go that day, since they had soft fluffy coats, perfect for hugging, snuggling and petting. It was a perfect match for the event. We had a warm welcome from the students and the dogs got tons of love from the students and we think they relax a lot of hard studying students.

UNA
June 2015. We were at PCC a non profit clinic we take our dogs to in South L.A. We had decided to bring another paralyzed dog into the rescue and we knew they had 4 paralyzed dogs there. They said they had one dog there, Dolly who had been living at the clinic for 2 yrs, her owners relinquished her when she became paralyzed. They said she was the longest resident there so we picked her. And poking her head in the door behind Dolly was this skinny hopping boxer. You could say she hitched a rescue ride with Dolly out of the clinic. She had been hit by a car and her owners didn't want her. She had been at the clinic for 6 months had a difficult recovery from the accident where she had lost a leg. They said she was very depressed and kept losing weight. How could we say no.
Una has fattened up and is now a certified therapy dog.How could we say no. This girl turned out to be the sweetest, loving, happy, social boxer. She is so photogenic she graced the cover of our Gallery Azul Christmas Fundraisers postcard.
We even got her a cart. Unfortunately this stubborn boxer girl is not fond of it, we'll see about that.
Please keep in mind all of our therapy dogs are for adoption to the right homes.

Our Friend Claudia Dawson
Claudia's cats need help.
Our friend Claudia Dawson left this earth to soon and so unexpected. She was an earth angel to anyone who came into her life and the animals she loved and rescued. She was there for Dharma Rescue when we needed her no matter how big or small the task was. We and her friends are now here to help her and make sure her 13 cats and 3 dogs are safe. Because she left so suddenly she made no arraingments for her animals that she loved dearly. They are now at risk of ending up in a kill shelter. All of her friends who love animals have gathered together to make sure their friend can rest knowing every rescue dog and cat she cared for will be safe . We are in need of homes and donations. The donations will be used to send the cats that are not homed to a cat sanctuary. It will cost $2200- $2500 for each cat that goes to a sanctuary. We will also need funds for medical care for the older cats that have health issues. Her 3 dogs are safe they have been adopted or will be adopted. Some of Claudia's friends who know her unconditional love for her animals have steped up to adopt 1 or 2 of her cats but that leaves a few that will need to go to a sanctuary.
As we all gathered after Claudia's funeral every person that wanted to help stepped up because each person has in some way recieved help for thier pets from Claudia, it is now time to help our dear friend.
Good bye Claudia. Or should we say hello Claudia. You are watching over all of us 2 legged and 4 legged beings. We know because even though you are gone we have met your friends who love animals and they are now our friends and who knows what path that will lead our rescue down. A good one for sure.
UPDATE MARCH 3,2013
Today Sid Vicious was taken to his new home. Sid was one of those cats that cannot be outside because of his spraying,he needed to go to a sanctuary. Something better happened and he has a home where he will be loved and cared for. The dogs are all in new homes and there are 5 cats left
UPDATE JUNE 1,2013.
Our dear friend Claudia can rest in peace. We worked with many of her friends to save her cats and dogs. Bonnie,Andy and Tami worked together to feed and clean up the cattery, and reassure Claidia's cats that they would not be sent to a shelter or be euthanised. An almost impossible feat was done because of the love from these lovely amazing ladies and the wonderful people who donated and adopted some of Claudia's cats. Claudia had wonderful friends and she was a wonderful giving and caring person who loved the animals with all her heart. Claudia was an earth angel and now she is a heavenly angel and has been looking over all of us and guiding Dharma Rescue to make new friends with her friends. Thank you Claudia.

Yesterday I spent the afternoon picking up a pom from the shelter. A email was circulated to rescues with a list of dogs in the medical ward and they needed to be adopted or taken out by rescues soon. We offered to take a pom with one eye that was removed and a blind small 14 yr old terrier mix. Another rescue got the blind out and we got the pom. She is very sweet and in a few days we have to take her to our vet to have the stitches removed. She needs a bath but stitches have to come out first. Looks like she was in heat and picked up as a stray. She will be on the website soon. We also need to name her.
Her new name is Pinky Winky.

Tonight I took Pinky Winky the pom who lost her eye to her new adopted home. I left her with a lovely couple, Theresa and Curtis. This is so routine for us, doing a home check, filling out the contract and leaving the dog or cat behind knowing they will forget you soon and only love their new family. Tonight was different, it felt like one of those rare perfect matches. And oh so much love filled the air in this home. I left with my little friend barking wondering why I was not taking her but I know she will soon realize how very lucky she is because she was in her forever home. As I drove home tired, knowing it was late and dinner would be cold, it didn’t matter because tonight made it all better. Tonight is for the dogs and cats on death row, abandoned in foreclosure homes, beaten, abused, injured, living on the streets, may they all get forever homes.

Tonight the cats got a cooked fish treat. As I pulled the fish apart and put it down for the cats I felt so good to see Raisin and Journey joined in on the feast. How safe they must feel. Raisin is about 5 months old and he was living under a house when he was 8 weeks old. he was dragging his rear legs that was probably grabbed by a animal. We were able to catch him and take him to the vet. After xrays our vet said they could not find any damage and give him time to gain his strength back in his rear legs. And that is what happend, he runs, jumps, climbs and plays. He has complete mobility back in his rear legs and is a happy boy. He has come a long way from that frightened kitten, now a purring loving boy.

One thing about rescuers we all work together to save lives. The Devore shelter is full and euthanizing to many dogs and cats because of over flow. Rescuers up there are trying to save as many as they can. We took a last minute plea for a cairn terrier with a injured leg.We said yes 2 hrs before she was euthanized. We couldn’t get there to pull her another rescuer took her out, another paid her pull fee. Next day she as taken to get spayed by a rescuer and a rescue transport service will be picking her up to drive her to Torrance to our vet to have her leg looked at. Donors were called to pay to get her out. All these people some I will never meet and some will become friends help to save this little dog because someone saw something special in this little dirty broken dog. And I promise you in 3 months she will be a shiny new dog on her way to a well deserved new life. Sometimes it is all worth the expense, time, heartache to rescue.

Lucy was not a cairn terrier she was a schnauzer under all that dirty hair. A schnauzer with a missing foot. She was a cute little girl and has a new family that loves her and keeps her clean and groomed something she deserves.
