jed's special needWhat is a special need? To Dharma Rescue a special need is a cat or dog with medical issues. When a dog or cat is rescued by Dharma Rescue, and they have a health problem. We try to first use alternative treatment by consulting with a holistic homeopathic vet from there the proper   treatment is used, homeopathic or conventional.

When a dog or cat  is adopted by that special human, who opens their heart to give a home to a dog or cat that is not the perfect picture we all expect. We teach the new guardian how to care for their new furry friend. Most of the time there is very little to do because the love they receive from their new home makes them stronger and healthier.

Who is Jed?
jedJed was a special need boxer from Boxer Rescue LA (BRLA). The vet gave him a few more days to live.  BRLA wanted to find a home he could go to so he could die in a comfortable place and be loved. He came home with us, that was in 2005. Instead of giving him a bed to die on, we started treating him in body, mind and spirit. There have been many Jed’s in our lives. Each one was treated special because we needed them, and from them we learned about strength, love and giving, those are priceless gifts. So open your heart and consider making a commitment to a special need dog or cat.

TONY MALONY -
tony malony cattony malonyThis is Tony Malony the 3 legged gangster.   He looks and acts tough but he really has a sweet side for us  2 legged beings. His toughness puts the fear of Bastet in all cats. His right hook is hard to dodge. With 3 legs he doesn’t float like a butterfly but a cat will tell you he stings like a bee. Tony needs to live in a home where he is the only cat , he will certainly keep all cats out of the yard, just like he did where he used to live. He got kicked out of that yard because of his loose stool. But he is now on a manly diet, a raw food diet and that old problem has been eliminated. Don’t tell Tony we spilled the beans and told the world he is a love muffin when it comes to being petted by us 2 legged beings. We would like to see Tony in a loving home or maybe with another cool dude who likes to watch  ESPN munching on snacks and  Tony loves snacking.

PIXIE -7 years old female Miniature Pinscher (min pin)
pixiepixiePixie is a 7-yr old, female, spayed Minpin/chihuahua mix. She is very sweet and loving, and in the process of house training. Pixie was on her way to the shelter. Luckily someone intervend and rescued Pixie. She had a couple teeth extractions and cleaned. She was walking funny so  she had her legs and back x-rayed. This poor little girl had a few old injuries. Her rear leg had a torn ligament, and a damaged disc in her back. There is not much that can be done since these were old injuries, possibly from a car accident or a blow to her back. We hope to find her a loving forever home where she can sit on a lap, and go for short walks.

LOVEY - 17 years old female cat (yes, seventeen years old!)
lovey catlovey catLovey is 17 years old female according to the vet.  Lovey was left behind by her owners.  A neighbor gave her a box, and a bowl of milk but didn’t know what to do with her.  A caring person went to see this old cat and took her to the vet. She got an exam and a much needed bath. The vet did blood work on the old girl. Her prognosis was not good. She had NO teeth and was in kidney failure. A holistic vet was consulted and she is on a homemade diet, supplements and homeopathy. The odds would say this old girl doesn’t have much time left, but so far with a warm home and good food she seems to be doing better. She is fine with dogs, but absolutely does not care for other cats.  We would like to see  Lovey in a quiet home where she can sleep and eat all day. She likes being held and purrs all the time, even in her sleep.  She cannot jump up on things but does insist on being picked up.    If someone wants to foster her or adopt her Dharma Rescue will take care of the medical bills, and teach her guardians how to care for her. Wouldn’t it be nice to give this old girl the respect and dignity she deserves for being on this plant for so long, and being tolerant of the neglect inflicted on her. She is a real trooper.  E-mail: info@dharmarescue.org
PRINCE - 5 years old male cat
prince catprince cat For 5 years Prince lived with a family that did not take care of him or his brother Peabody. They lived outside and one day Prince was hit by a car. He couldn’t walk and the family did not bother taking him to the vet. Eventually his body mended and Prince learned to live with a stiff crippled leg. One day his family left them somewhere to be boarded while his owner went to rehab. They paid boarding fees for a few months and then stopped paying and did not answer calls about Prince and Peabody’s care. They ended up being orphans and now live at a small cat sanctuary. Prince was on a waiting list to go to the vet and have his leg checked but unfortunately he jumped and fell. He had x-rays at Emergency Vet. With old fractures in both rear legs from the car accident and the vet suggested removing his crippled leg. We decided to get a second opinion. He did get his surgery, but still has four legs and has a new ball in his joint. Prince is very affectionate and talkative. He likes sitting on a lap, having someone just talk to him and you will always find him nudging his way in between people having a conversation. His vet said his new hip will not be a problem. He does have a fracture on the other leg so we don’t know how fragile it is. And if there is another medical bill, Dharma Rescue will help pay for the surgery if done by our vet. Our funds are limite, but Prince is worth every penny. The love he has to offer is priceless. Prince's trade mark is drools when he is getting loved. E-mail: info@dharmarescue.org
